TGIF Dark Beers vs. Light

To continue the theme of playing this week, let’s talk about beer! Being it is the weekend and that most of Panama’s population will be drinking in the next few days, how do we decide on the healthy, alcoholic version of choices? The best choice is known, don’t drink! But what if you want to, what do you drink?
People often ask me if I drink, and the answer is…yes I do…I drink dark ales/beer.  The first response I usually receive is a squished up face and a ‘why’???
The answer is easy. Dark beers contain natural antioxidants and vitamins that can prevent heart disease and even help rebuild muscle. Antioxidants help reverse the cellular damage caused by oxidizing compounds that naturally occur in your body.

Researchers at the University of Washington,  found that dark beers –specifically Guinness — had greater health benefits than light lagers.  Ironically, the old Guinness slogan was “A Guinness a day,” a thinly veiled promise of the beer’s health benefits. Gotta love it and researchers of beer!

url-10Men’s Health found that Avery Maharaja Imperial India Pale Ale contains 80 times the hops of big-brand lagers. Hops contain polyphenols, compounds that can lower cholesterol, risks of cancer and kill viruses.
Ounce-for-ounce, beer has one of the highest energy contents of any food or drink. Only pure fat can top it. So keep that in mind when you guzzle three or four at the local pub. Your average beer has about 120 calories, that doesn’t mean reach for a beer each time you feel exhaustion coming however. One gives you energy, maybe even two, but three, four…so on so forth just makes you fat!
If you’re worried about dehydration, keep in mind that beer is 93 percent water. According to a Spanish study, dark beer may actually provide better hydration than H2O alone when you’re sweating it out under the sun. Great news here in Panama!
A recent study published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture has also found that dark beer has higher iron content compared to lighter beers. Remember, iron is an essential mineral that our bodies need. Iron is a part of all cells and does many jobs including carrying oxygen from our lungs throughout the rest of our bodies.

So to end the discussion, the answer is always dark beer, the reasons being above! Now enjoy your weekend! And remember….all things in moderation!!

TGIF! Mantener nuestro tema esta semana jugando…
